Website Security is Critical for The Future of Your Business

Google is leading the fight to get all websites to add security. As of the first quarter of 2017, Google Chrome will now display a Not Secure warning on websites without valid security.  If your website says Not secure, you will surely lose customers to your competition.  If you don’t have an SSL certificate, Google will flag your site very soon if it has not already done so.

Why This Matters To YOU?

Since Google is all about it’s users, it is coming up with all kinds of ways to make us feel secure on the internet. With its recent announcement, Google will flag all the unencrypted internet by the end of 2017.

In the early days, the internet was used mainly to communicate information. As time went on, buying and selling on the web became more common.  This means that people are sending sensitive and confidential information across the web, which then gives criminals the opportunity to steal that information.

Identity theft, stolen credit card numbers, stolen logins — these and other cyber crimes have become commonplace.

Google will flag 2/3rd of all websites as unsafe.  So, if you want to stay in business, you must protect your visitors and your customers by making sure that your website is completely secure.  In other words, if your website does not have an SSL, it will openly display a “NOT SECURE” message in the URL address bar.

What is SSL And How Does It Work?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer.

It is a special communication protocol that protects the information being transmitted across the web. It creates a secure connection between a person’s web browser and the server of the company they are interacting with, so all communication between the two is kept private and secure, safe from eavesdropping, and cannot be stolen or changed in transit.

All the information that is passed through this secure connection is encrypted before being sent, and decrypted only when received on the other end.

If someone manages to access the information en route, it is useless to them because they cannot read what it says.

To enable SSL, a website needs to get an SSL Certificate. When your website has an SSL Certificate, your visitors will see a small padlock in front of your URL. Your URL will also start with HTTPS instead of HTTP. The S on the end stands for Secure. Depending on the internet browser they are using, there may also be a green bar and the word Secure in front of your domain name.

If you don’t have the SSL certificate, a secure connection cannot be established, that means, your company information will not be digitally connected to a cryptographic key.

SSL Certificates have the following information:

  • Name of the holder
  • Serial number and expiration date
  • Copy of the certificate holder’s public key
  • Digital Signature of the certificate-issuing authority

Why Is It Crucial To Have An SSL Certificate?

Everyone knows that it is critical you secure any financial data, but even basic personal information such a person’s name, address, phone number and email address should also be secured.

In fact, your website needs to be fully secured no matter how much or how little information you gather from your visitors.

Google Chrome is already marking sites with Not Secure in the address bar if the site asks for any sensitive information (like login information, financial information or other confidential information) when the website does not have an SSL Certificate.

Firefox displays a small padlock with a red diagonal slash through it.

Eventually, all websites without an SSL Certificate will be marked as not secure even if they are collecting any sensitive information at all.  See more reasons below why it’s crucial to have an SSL certificate.

Encrypts Sensitive Information

The information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to it’s destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, as well as other sensitive information — if it is not encrypted.  When you have an SSL certificate, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to; thus making it safe and secure.

Provides Authentication

Because your SSL Certificate is specific to your domain and contains information associated directly with your domain, your visitors can be confident that you are who you say you are, and not an impostor pretending to be you in order to steal their confidential information.

Protects You From Cybercriminals

According to Cybersecurity Ventures, cybersecurity damages will cost the world over $6 trillion annually by 2021.  It is impossible to escape the rising tide of cybercrime if your website doesn’t have an SSL certificate. They will identify weaknesses in your network… when information is transmitted.  Recently, cyber criminals have been refining malicious strains that are specifically designed to capture data while moving between destinations.

Allows You To Take Payments Online

SSL allows you to take payments and accept credit card information.  Since SSL is mandated by the payment card industry, this gives you a big advantage over your competitors who do not have SSL.

Builds Trust & Credibility

Many professional websites have already implemented SSL on their website. Adding an SSL Certificate to your website automatically associates you with business professionals and gives you much more credibility as a business.  With SSL certificates, your customers will see visuals like lock icon and green address bar that indicates well-trusted encryption is in use. Well, if I as a customer will see that on your website, I will be assured that my information is traveling safe.
