Having an effective website will not only improve your visitors’ user experience, but it can also guarantee you more traffic and increase your conversions. There are a number of things you should keep in mind when designing a website. These include:
1) Search engine optimization
Your website should be optimized for search engines for higher search placement on search results. Use the right keywords in your content and at the right density. Ideally, keep the keywords at between 3 to 5 percent density.
Use meta tags, H1 tags, alt tag and title tags on the website. Also, get links from other websites to point to your site using your target keyword as the anchor text. You can get free links by submitting articles to article directories, commenting on blogs or forums, or asking for like exchange opportunities with other webmasters.
2) Optimize your images
While images make a website exciting, they can increase the total time it takes for the website to load. Online visitors are very impatient and will leave your website if it takes a lot of time to load. Therefore, use images sparingly. Also, optimize the images for the web and use formats that load fast such as JPEG and GIF. Avoid using images in Bitmap format which is very heavy and will make the site load slower.
3) Make sure your website is functional
Check for broken links in your website and fix them. Also, ensure they are pointing to the correct pages. Make it easy for the visitor to navigate your website. Have the menu and navigation links easy to identify and hotlink your images to improve navigation.
Avoid videos or instantly playing music on your website. Not only do they reduce the site’s load time, they may also distract the visitor from getting the information he is looking for. Use videos and audios sparingly and only if they will add value to the information that the visitor is looking for.
4) Website compatibility
As you design your website, test it frequently on different browsers to see how it is displayed. Some browsers interpret HTML and other coding languages differently and may give you a different output from what you expect. Also, check how colors are displayed. It is good to use the 216 Web Safe colors that are displayed in the same way across all browsers.
The above web design tips will help you design a great website that not only attracts traffic, but also gets higher conversions.
